How to clean a baby car seat

By Kat Gemmell

Spills, crumbs and little accidents are all part of everyday life with a baby or toddler, but knowing the best way to clean a baby car seat isn’t always straightforward. Because car seats are designed to protect your child in the event of an accident, it’s important to clean them carefully, using methods that won’t compromise their safety or performance.

In this guide, we’ll share clear, practical advice on how to clean a baby or child’s car seat, covering fabrics, straps and everyday messes. We’ll also highlight how this guidance applies to Silver Cross car seats, alongside any specific care tips to follow.

How often should you clean a car seat?

How often you clean your child’s car seat will depend on how it’s used and what everyday life brings. As a general guide:

  • Wipe down the seat and its components with a damp cloth on a regular basis
  • Spot clean spills and messes as soon as possible to help prevent stains and odours
  • Plan a deeper clean every few months, or sooner after bigger accidents such as sickness or leaks

The best time to wash a car seat is when you won’t need it straight away, allowing fabrics and components to dry fully before use. If you need to clean it more urgently, focus on gentle spot cleaning and allow as much drying time as possible, as using a car seat before it’s completely dry can affect comfort and performance.

Regular cleaning is also a good opportunity to check your child still fits the seat correctly, and that harnesses, buckles and covers are in good working order.

How to clean baby and child car seats: step-by-step

Before you start any cleaning, it’s important to remember that car seats are a vital piece of safety equipment. While regular cleaning helps keep your little one’s travel environment hygienic and comfortable, using the wrong products or techniques can damage key components and affect how the seat performs.

The step-by-step guidance below is designed to help parents clean their child’s car seat safely and confidently, while protecting the materials and safety features that matter most.

Step 1: Check the care label or manual

The first step should always be checking the care label and your car seat instructions. This will tell you:

  • Whether the covers can be removed
  • Whether they’re machine washable
  • The correct wash temperature and drying method

Many car seat covers, including those on Silver Cross models, are designed to be removable and machine washable at 30°C.

Step 2: Remove the car seat and clear loose debris

If possible, take the car seat out of your vehicle and place it on a clean, flat surface. This makes it easier to access all areas and prevents debris or moisture from getting into your car.

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any loose debris, focusing on seams and creases. Crumbs and dirt can also work their way into the safety buckle and affect how well it locks, so it’s also a good idea to check and clean the buckle carefully.

Step 3: Tackle spills and stains

Wet messes such as milk spills or vomit require a little more TLC, as they may have soaked into the fabric.

Before attempting to add any cleaning products, first blot the area with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing the area, as this can push stains deeper into the fabric.

As with general household spills and stains on clothes, it’s best to act quickly as tougher messes are easier to clean when they’re fresh.

Step 4: Clean the fabric

How you clean the fabric will depend on whether or not the cover can be removed.

If you have a removable cover, take it off carefully and machine wash on the recommended setting (often a cool 30°C) using a mild detergent. If you need to know how to clean a baby’s car seat without removing the cover, gently spot clean the area with warm water and mild detergent, taking care not to oversoak the padding underneath. Using gentle methods helps protect delicate fabrics and internal padding.

Step 5: Clean the plastic parts, harness and buckle

Extra care should be taken when cleaning these components of a car seat, as they play a critical role in your child’s safety. Remember to:

  • Wipe plastic components, harness straps and buckles with a clean, damp cloth
  • Use mild soap only if needed and avoid harsh chemicals, bleach or solvents, as these can weaken the plastic shell and compromise performance
  • Never soak, submerge or remove the harness

This guidance applies to all baby car seats, including Silver Cross models, as harness systems are designed to remain fixed for safety.

Step 6: Let it air dry completely

It’s important to allow all parts of the car seat to dry fully before reassembling or using it. This helps to protect the materials and prevent any odours.

Air drying is recommended for most car seats. Try to keep fabrics away from direct heat sources such as radiators, and avoid tumble drying unless the manufacturer instructions confirm that it’s safe.

Step 7: Reassemble and perform a safety check

Once everything is clean and dry, you should:

  • Refit the covers carefully
  • Check harness straps aren’t twisted
  • Ensure the buckle clicks securely
  • Reinstall the car seat following the fitting instructions

This is also a good opportunity to check your little one still fits within the seat’s parameters and make any adjustments needed, such as increasing the headrest height.
